All the latest Nokia's have an infrared port (except the 3210 and 3310), this sounds great and it is! But.......the old Nokia's don't have an infrared port which is fully IrDA compatible so you must setup your computer in a special way to still use these models.
Here is a table with the different ports:

Note 1: The reason why these handsets cannot be used in DirectIR mode is the fact that they don't have the original Snake game. They have a new Snake II.
Note 2: To use DirectIR mode, you must turn on infrared with the 'Snake 2-Player' mode (menu 6-2-3).

Windows 95 is the only Windows version in which you can use DirectIR as well as IrDA without changing the drivers. When the infrared drivers are loaded in Win95, you will see in your 'Device Manager' ('Control Panel' -> 'System' -> 'Device Manager') that the infrared port is stored under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' and described as a 'Generic Ir Serial Port'. This is VERY important! In newer Windows versions (98, 98SE, 2000 & ME), the infrared port is stored under 'Network adapters'. To use these newer Windows versions with a Nokia which can only be used in DirectIR mode, we have to change the drivers in such a way that the infrared port will be stored under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' as a 'Generic Ir Serial Port'!!! It is crucial that you understand this principle, if not, read the text above again!

Not all computers/notebooks can be setup in DirectIR mode, especially newer notebooks have so-called 'PCI-Based IrDA Ports'. If you have such a notebook, then you're outta luck because these will NOT work in DirectIR mode! Here is a list of such notebooks:

Now it is time to choose how you want to setup your Windows. If your phone support IrDA, use that mode (even if it also supports DirectIR).
